The Government Office for Temporary Use

A government programme to allow empty public buildings to be used on a temporary basis includes the offices at 2 Rivergate next to Temple Meads and near the site of the evolving Creative Common. The Department for Business is now tendering for organisations to manage the space and help incubate and support start-ups. At Pop-up Bristol we're talking to others who are thinking about bidding or developing a partnership bid, so if anyone is interested in this opportunity, then do get in touch. 

Pop-up Bedminster?

Bedminster is one of the 12 winners of the Government's Portas Pilots competition, winning cash from the Department for Communitities and advice from 'retail guru' Mary Portas.Chosen from over 370 applications, the plans focus on tackling empty shops, becoming an internationally renowned home of street art and street theatre, and also include a bicycle rickshaw service. Pop-up Bristol are looking forward to seeing the plans flourish and to be part of help making it happen.

Mayfest

As part of Mayfest, 40 Alfreds Place and Harts Bakery are helping creating a pop-up cafe at the Parlour at 31 College Green. The cafe will be the home of Mayfest offering "a one-stop-shop for all you queries, up-to-the-minute information, reviews, gossip and even a chance to share tea and cake with the Mayfest team and artists". The cafe will be open for 10 days from Friday 18 May. Mayfest will also be occupying some other interesting locations around the city, including the Trenchard Street car park and a secret location for the  Guild of Cheesemakers show.

A Creative Common?!

A tent has gone up on the empty car park next to Temple Meads, heralding the start of the “Creative Common” – which aims to be an exciting new creative hub in the heart of the city. Within the Temple Quay enterprise zone, a group of collaborators from the likes of Co-exist, the Invisible Circus, Circomedia and Coda architects are working with Bristol City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency to create a temporary space to showcase the best of Bristol's performers, artists, eateries and enterprises. The Big Top is set to be open from June until October...

Stapleton Road Tavern

Stapleton Road Tavern is a temporary creative project space situated in a disused public house on the border of Old Market and Easton in Bristol. A series of commissions and events features local artists and community groups. Delivering a range of arts activities throughout Spring 2012, the intention is to create a space where individuals and groups can raise the profile and visibility of their activity and contribute to the regeneration of the Stapleton Road area. 

Arts West Side

Arts West Side is a venue in Old Market running small scale community and arts activities, including exhibitions, pop-up shops, private views and workshops.

Plot 3

What's going to pop-up at "Plot 3" - the car park next to Temple Meads? The Council's planning guidance assumes "anything can happen" - including open air cinemas, theatres, music, hot food markets, pop-up galleries and raised bed allotments. There are also plans afoot at the Diesel Depot round the corner and ideas surfacing for the old Parcel Force building itself, all within the new Enterprise Zone.

Councillor Anthony Negus has said that “With prospects for permanent development on hold, we want something different to miles of hoarding with fading developers’ site signs....  creating a place where ideas can be formed, exchanged and grow into enterprise.... So the temporary uses we’re seeking must be innovative and attractive destinations in themselves"

Eat Drink Bristol Fashion

A pop-up restaurant is coming to Queen Square next month.  From April 25 to May 7, Eat Drink Bristol Fashion will host restaurants under canvas with room for 100 diners, a Champagne bar, and “British Tapas”

Paper Scissors Stone

This Easter a new artist run shop is opening in Cabot Circus - Paper • Scissors • Stone, a 'temporium' showcasing local design. Volume 1 of Paper • Scissors • Stone will launch with a party in the shop on the 4th of April from 5pm.

Mi Casa

Kristjan Bigland and Alexis John opened Mi Casa at the Scouts and Guides boathouse. Mi Casa is next popping up at  the Red Lion Wine House on 4th and 5th April

In Cabot Circus

In December 2011, Pop-Up Bristol acquired three, previously empty, shop units within Cabot Circus shopping centre to showcase the works of a diverse range of local creatives. 5 Bristol-based creative groups showcased original paintings, illustrations, crafts and gifts from over a 100 artists. The five creative groups were Made in Bristol, Upfest, Drawn in Bristol, Smithson Gallery & Bristol Creatives.
